A Stroll Through Time: The Great Dickens Christmas Fair's 40th Anniversary
This holiday season, we stepped back in time to the cobblestone streets and cozy glow of Victorian London at The Great Dickens Christmas Fair in San Francisco. Marking its 40th anniversary, this annual tradition transformed the Cow Palace into a whimsical wonderland filled with characters, festivities, and traditions straight from the pages of Charles Dickens’ beloved stories. Here’s a glimpse into our unforgettable experience at this year’s landmark event.

A Time-Traveling Tea Break
Our day began with a delightful afternoon tea at Two English Ladies. Seated at a quaint table adorned with fine china, we sipped steaming Earl Grey and nibbled on delicate pastries. The soothing clink of teacups paired with the warm chatter of visitors in Victorian attire set the stage for a magical journey through the past.
Dressing the Part and Immersing in Mystery
Everywhere we turned, we encountered elegantly dressed gentlemen, ladies in elaborate gowns, and street urchins bustling through the foggy lanes. It truly felt like stepping into a different era.
Our immersion deepened when we joined Sherlock Holmes himself to solve a gripping crime. Clues scattered across the fairgrounds guided us on a thrilling chase to uncover the culprit before the dastardly murder of a London gentleman, Richard Milnes, could occur. The interactive experience was both challenging and captivating, and we felt like true detectives narrowing down suspects in the nick of time.

A Treasure Trove of Holiday Finds
As we wandered through the fair, we couldn’t resist stopping by the pewter shop, where artisans demonstrated their craft, creating intricate figurines and jewelry. Another gem was the Christmas ornament stall, where we found a one-of-a-kind bauble that will forever remind us of this magical day.
Raise a Glass to 40 Years
To celebrate the fair's 40th anniversary, we indulged in their signature cocktail, the Red Ruby Jubilee. This festive drink, with its vibrant hue and refreshing flavor, captured the spirit of the occasion perfectly. Cheers to four decades of Dickensian magic!
Dickens’ Own Words and Captivating Performances
A visit to Charles Dickens’ own home at the fair was a highlight. Surrounded by the cozy warmth of his study, we listened as he read from A Christmas Carol, his voice bringing the timeless tale to life in a way that gave us chills.
The day was further enriched by an array of musical performances. From rousing carols to spirited dance numbers, the live entertainment kept us enthralled and added a merry soundtrack to our adventure.

A Feast Fit for a Londoner
No Victorian outing would be complete without sampling the fare. We tucked into hearty portions of fish and chips, chicken pot pie, and savory meat pies, each bite as comforting as the festive surroundings.
Closing Thoughts
As the day came to an end, we left The Great Dickens Christmas Fair with full hearts, a handful of treasures, and memories that will last a lifetime. The event was a splendid celebration of 40 years of bringing the Dickensian era to life, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s festivities.
If you’ve never been, we can’t recommend this experience enough. Step into a world of whimsy, wonder, and timeless holiday cheer—there’s truly nothing else like it.
Happy Holidays and cheers to 40 more years of Dickensian delight!
