Lake Kawaguchi: A Tranquil Getaway with Stunning Mount Fuji Views
After the bustling energy of Tokyo, our journey continued to the serene and picturesque Lake Kawaguchi, a destination that offered breathtaking views of Mount Fuji, tranquil landscapes, and rich cultural experiences. This second leg of our trip was all about slowing down, immersing ourselves in nature, and savoring the local charm. From strolling through artisan markets and relaxing in a private onsen to catching glimpses of Mount Fuji and exploring vibrant autumn festivals, Lake Kawaguchi provided a perfect contrast to the city’s fast pace. In this post, I’ll share the highlights of our two-day stay in this peaceful lakeside retreat. This post is part of a three-part travel series, with each post focusing on a different city we visited—Tokyo, Lake Kawaguchi, and Kyoto.
Day 7: Journey to Lake Kawaguchi – Fall Leaves, Local Artisans, and a Cozy Evening
Our seventh day in Japan was a travel day as we left the bustling city of Tokyo for the serene beauty of Lake Kawaguchi. Nestled at the base of Mount Fuji, this picturesque area is known for its stunning views, tranquil atmosphere, and seasonal festivals.
Traveling to Lake Kawaguchi
We departed Tokyo Station in the morning and took a comfortable bus ride to Kawaguchiko Station. The journey was scenic, with glimpses of Mount Fuji peeking through the clouds along the way, building anticipation for what lay ahead.
Lunch at Beef Cutlet Kou Shu Ya
Upon arriving, we made our way to Beef Cutlet Kou Shu Ya for lunch. This spot is a hidden gem, offering perfectly fried beef cutlets with a crispy exterior and a juicy, flavorful interior. The meal was hearty and satisfying, giving us the energy we needed to start exploring the area.
Check-In at Mizno Hotel
After lunch, we checked into Mizno Hotel, a luxurious boutique hotel overlooking Lake Kawaguchi with panoramic views of Mount Fuji. The hotel's tranquil ambiance and thoughtful amenities made it the ideal base for our stay.
Kubota Itchiku Art Museum – A Glimpse into Art and Nature
During our visit to Lake Kawaguchi, we stopped by the Kubota Itchiku Art Museum, a site dedicated to the intricate kimono artwork of renowned textile artist Itchiku Kubota. While we didn’t tour the exhibits inside, we took time to walk through the museum’s front entrance and explore its enchanting garden. The serene pathways, framed by lush greenery and artistic stonework, offered a tranquil atmosphere that perfectly complemented the natural beauty of the area. Even without stepping indoors, the garden alone made the visit worthwhile.
Fuji-Kawaguchiko Fall Leaves Festival
We were fortunate to visit on the last day of the Fuji-Kawaguchiko Fall Leaves Festival, a seasonal celebration of autumn’s vibrant beauty. The festival featured a variety of local vendors, offering handmade crafts, artisanal goods, and delicious treats.
We sampled fresh mochi and couldn’t resist purchasing unique souvenirs: adorable chopstick holders and cat-shaped sake cups, each handcrafted by local artisans. Walking among the colorful trees and illuminated paths created a magical atmosphere, making it a highlight of our day.
Sushi Takeout and a Cozy Evening at Author’s Bar
To wind down, we ordered sushi takeout and enjoyed it at Author’s Bar, a cozy spot within Mizno Hotel. With the warm ambiance, a stunning view of the lake, and delicious sushi, it was the perfect way to relax after a day of travel and exploration.
Day 8: Relaxation and Stunning Views at Lake Kawaguchi
Our second day at Lake Kawaguchi was all about taking in the serene beauty of the area, savoring delicious food, and experiencing the tranquility of a private onsen.
Breakfast at Mizno Hotel
We started the morning with breakfast at Mizno Hotel, a delightful spread of Japanese and Western options that perfectly complemented the peaceful ambiance. The dining room’s large windows offered breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, setting a tranquil tone for the day.
Partial Views of Mount Fuji
Back in our hotel room, we stepped out onto the porch to enjoy the crisp air and stunning views. While Mount Fuji was mostly shrouded in clouds, the tip of its iconic peak made a brief, magical appearance—a mesmerizing sight we won’t forget.
Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway
Our next adventure took us to the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway. The cable car ride ascended to a scenic viewpoint offering breathtaking vistas of Lake Kawaguchi and, on clear days, Mount Fuji in all its glory. Even though the summit was still partially hidden, the sweeping views of the lake and the surrounding autumn foliage were spectacular.
Strolling Through a Residential Neighborhood and Lunch at Renge Ramen
After the ropeway, we opted for a leisurely walk through a quiet residential neighborhood, taking in the charming local architecture and peaceful atmosphere. Our stroll led us to Renge Ramen, a cozy ramen shop tucked away from the main streets. The rich, flavorful broth and perfectly cooked noodles made for a comforting lunch.
Private Onsen at Mizno Hotel
In the afternoon, we returned to Mizno Hotel to enjoy a private onsen. The experience was incredibly relaxing, with the warm waters soothing our muscles as we gazed out at the serene surroundings. It was the perfect way to unwind and connect with the peaceful nature of Lake Kawaguchi.
Shabu Dinner at Mizno Hotel Restaurant
We ended the day with a shabu-shabu dinner at Mizno Hotel’s restaurant. The meal was an interactive and delicious experience, with fresh vegetables, high-quality meats, and flavorful dipping sauces. Each bite was a reminder of the care and quality that defines Japanese cuisine.
